A few years ago we went on holiday to the United Stated. Whenever I am abroad I always like to visit the supermarkets. I like browsing to discover new things to experiment with in the kitchen. During this holiday we bought several spice blends.
One of them was a mix to make Sloppy Joe. This is a typical American sandwich with ground beef with tomato sauce. When I made these, my brother took a look at the sandwich and immediately said "This is going to be a mess!". Fortunately tat is no problem when eating a sandwich with the name Sloppy Joe 😊.

We added a little cheese biscuit because we are crazy about cheese! We cooked the corn cobs in a pan. Of course you can cook these on the barbecue but although the picture it quite sunny it is still quite cold in this spring 🥶. But I think we will definitely will make these again this summer!
Enjoy!

Ingredients (for 10 sandwiches)
Sloppy Joe:
1 red bell pepper
1 large onion
1 clove of garlic
500 grams of minced meat
1 tbsp cumin
1 tbsp paprika
0,5 tbsp Cayenne pepper
pepper and salt
250-300 grams of tomato sauce/puree
Other:
200 grams of grated cheese
4 corncobs (or more)
sunflower oil
curry powder
paprika
lettuce
tomato
10 white buns
Method
Finely dice the onion and bell pepper and press the garlic clove.
Stir fry the bell pepper, onion an garlic with a bit of sunflower oil in a frying pan.
When the onion is softened add the minced meat and spices. Keep stirring.
When the meat is cooked add the tomato sauce and store until everything is covered in the sauce. Keep in mind how much sauce you add. The sauce should be quite thick so it doesn't run of the bun when plating the sandwich. Keep stirring for a few minutes and reduce the heat to a low simmer. Taste the sauce and add pepper and salt to taste and if you like that you can add more Cayenne pepper to make it more spicy.
For the cheese biscuits: preheat the oven on 180 degrees Celsius. Cover one or two baking tray with baking paper. Divide the cheese in 10 little circles on the baking tray. The circles should be roughly the size of the bun.
Bake in the oven until the cheese is sufficiently melted and starting to get crisp on the edges. The cheese doesn't need to colour. Wen you get them out of the oven they might be a little soft but they will crisp up further when cooling down.
Marinate the corncobs with the curry powder, paprika, pepper and salt and a splash of sunflower oil. Roast then in a frying or grill pan. You can also cook them on a barbecue.
Building the burger:
- Cut open the buns.
- Chop the lettuce and tomato.
- Place some lettuce and tomato on the lower half of the bun.
- Place a generous amount of the minced meat on top.
- Finish with a cheese biscuit and the top of the bun.
If you like you can add ketchup or mayonnaise we normally don't. Serve with the corncobs.
