De Roestige Vork: What's in a name!

We always get mixed reactions to our name: De Roestige Vork (The Rusty Fork). 'It sure stand out!' 'It doesn't sound so delicious...' Maybe we should start with an explanation how we got this name 🙂.

Hi, my name is Nadine, I started cooking when I was a teenager. At home my dad was the one who does most of the cooking. My mom doensn't really like to cook, although recently she has picked up the baking. Whenever my dad had to work late we would get a good old cooked dish from my mom. That might sound good....but when your mom doesn't really like cooking it is not guaranteed! (sorry mom)

So what do you then? Well, I started trying out for myself. I worked in a supermarket for quite some years and there I saw all kinds of new stuff to cook. I still have a book full of clippings from magazine and websites of recipes I tried or wanted to try. It wasn't a succes all the time though! I think my brother and sister might still remember the incredibly failed risotto with the burned to a crip onions!

Then there were two

Speaking of brothers an sistes, I have one of each. My sister lives far away Down Under. She can cook as goos as me, probably even better! Make sure you follow Aussiefarmlifecooking on Instagram! My brother shouldn't be allowed in the kitchen, unless you are into crunchy minced meat....... But honestly, he started cooking sometimes recently and it actually good! Maybe he wants to be part of De Roestige Vork?

Well he is not, but he is the reason De Roestige Vork exists. Because on a vacation to France he met this girl and she is still there. From the beginning Leoni and I shared enthusiasm for cooking and baking, so I was all for their marriage 😊.

Leoni and I spend hours talking about food and fantasising about our restaurant. It wasn't all talk, we have spent a great number of hours in the kitchen together. The restaurant is not there (yet), but who knows!

Grandma knows best

Oh right, the name. Let me explain! As a family we often go on vacation together. One time we were in Portugal. My grandmother often went with us. One evening we were looking at the setting sun at a small harbour.

Looking down in the shallow water and I saw a rusty fork. So I said: "Look! A rusty fork."

I have no idea why I said it 🤷‍♀️. My grandmother immediately said: "That should be your name for your restaurant!" That is how De Roestige Vork was born.

Then there were three

The restaurant is still something we fantasize about during the many hours together in the kitchen. We started with the Facebook-page. That gave us some catering jobs here and there which were really fun! We even have an Instagram page!

As with all succesfull enterpises 😊 expanding the business didn't take long. But is was not an easy thing to organise because the new addition had to share our aversion to mushrooms! And the concept was up to then 'two sisters (in law) who are crazy about baking and cooking'. There wouldn't be to many candidates...

But then there was Judith! Sister of Leoni. Also and food enthiast and ven had an applicable school degree. You'll get to know us more throughout the bogs and recipes we will post. For a short intro check out our bio!

Hopefully we can inspire with our recipes and get you ethusiastic about cooking and baking. Leave us a comment on social or contact us by e-mail for any questions or requests!

Let's do this!
